BBB warns of Memorial Day scams

Clearwater, Florida (BBB) - The Better Business Bureau reminds us that Memorial Day is a time to honor those who serve and remember those who have died in war. But sadly, it has also become a key opportunity for scammers to target those who are serving or have served their nation, especially elderly veterans.

The Better Business Bureau urges consumers and donors to be aware of scammers that feed off the military.

Bay area craftsmen make urns for veterans

LAND O'LAKES, Florida (AP) - Woodworkers in the Tampa Bay area are making urns to ensure that the remains of indigent veterans are preserved with dignity.

The Veterans Urn Project is a collaboration by the Woodcrafters Club of Tampa, the Woodcrafters Club of St. Petersburg and the AMVETS Post 9 in Odessa.

The urns are made from donated wood. Each is inscribed with a military emblem. They're sent free of charge around the country.

Hillsborough Commission on Status of Women meets this week

Tampa, Florida-- The group that advises the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners on women's issues, the Commission on the Status of Women, is meeting thisweek.

County officials say the meeting will take place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28 on the 26th Floor Conference Room B at County Center.

If you have an interest in women's issues in Hillsborough County, you're welcome to attend. The county center is located at 601 E. Kennedy Blvd in Downtown Tampa.

Free Lowry Park Zoo admission for Military Members

Tampa, Florida-- The Lowry Park Zoo is honoring active military members and veterans on Memorial Day, May 27th, with free admission.

All you have to do is show your Department of Defense ID at the zoo's ticket counter and you along with three direct dependents get in at no charge.

The Lowry Park Zoo opens at 9:30 a.m. on Memorial Day and is open until 5 p.m.

HIllsborough County offices closed for Memorial Day

Tampa, Florida--If you need to do business with Hillsborough County keep in mind all county offices in downtown will be closed Monday May 27th in honor of Memorial Day.

In addition to the County Offices being closed, all the Constitutional Offices- including the Property Appraiser, Supervisor of Elections, Tax Collector and the Clerk of Courts Offices- will be closed as well.
